The French Senate has voted to ban the wearing of headscarves in sports competitions, arguing that neutrality is a requirement on the playing field.
The French Supreme Legislative Chamber voted to change the law, saying that the wearing of “visible religious symbols is prohibited” while participating in events and competitions organized by sports federations.
In the text of the law, the senators clearly said that this change is intended to stop “wearing a headscarf in sports competitions”. The senators added that the headscarf could endanger the safety of the athletes who wear them while practicing their sport.
This change was proposed by the right-wing group, the Republicans and opposed by the French Government. However, 160 senators voted in favor of the change and 143 were against.
A committee of members of the Senate and House of Commons must now convene and find a compromise before the text is published, which means that this amendment can be changed.
It is unclear whether this part of the law will be implemented during the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Olympic Committee has not yet reacted to this change.
