The G7 countries’ health ministers are concerned about the growing number of people affected by Omicron, a variant of COVID-19, and stressed the importance of working together in responding to the new wave of infection.

The Health Ministers of the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan met to discuss the proliferation of the Omicron variant, after which they issued a joint statement.

“Ministers, who are deeply concerned about the growing number of cases, agree that these developments should be seen as the greatest threat to global public health at the moment,” the statement said.

The statement said that cooperation, exchange of data and experiences are more important than ever and that this will be the key to resolving the rapidly changing situation.

The ministers reiterated their commitment to the promises to build protection and fight infection, contained in the G7 and G20 statements.

“The ministers have agreed that in addition to exchanging information, it is very important that we work together to respond to the rapidly growing Omicron wave,” the statement said.

It was also said that the ministers stressed the importance of equal access to diagnosis, genome sequencing, vaccines and therapies.

“In addition, they agree on the growing importance of support campaigns and regular testing as well as ongoing non-pharmaceutical measures,” the statement said.
