German Chancellor Olaf Scholz held talks in Kiev with Ukrainian President Zelensky. The German Chancellor said that Germany is close to Ukraine and supports it.
“Germany is close to you,” Scholz told a news conference. “My country is impressed by the democratic movement in Ukraine and supports the European path it has followed since 2014,” he added.
Financial aid but not weapons
Chancellor Scholz noted that Germany has already provided large sums of financial assistance to Ukraine to help avoid what he called “foreign influences”. Scholz also announced a new loan of 150 million euros for Kiev. But on the other hand the chancellor also expressed Germany’s firm opposition to sending deadly weapons to Ukraine.
Talks in Moscow
After the visit to Kiev, the German Chancellor travels to Moscow to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The chancellor said he would stress in talks with Putin the grave consequences of any invasion, adding that the West was ready to impose “very broad and effective sanctions.” At the same time he said that Germany is ready to hold a serious dialogue with Russia on European security.
“There are no good reasons for activities on the Ukrainian border,” Scholz said. “Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are non-negotiable. “We expect Russia to take clear steps to resolve the situation,” Scholz said after the meeting in Kiev.
