Markus Gisdol is no longer the coach of the Russian first division team, Lokomotiv Moscow. The 52-year-old has terminated his contract with the Muscovites influenced by recent events.
Gisdol and Lokomotiv Moscow parted ways and confirmation came from the club itself through an official stance. Gisdol took over the leadership of the team in October, sponsored by Ralf Rangnick, who was still working as the sporting director of the Russian capital’s club at the time. Gisdol, the former coach of Hoffenheim, Hamburg and Cologne in the Bundesliga, explained that he had no motive to work in this team after the start of the Russian occupation of Ukraine and the exclusion of Russian clubs from European competitions.
“I can not continue my work in a country where its leader is responsible for the war and aggression in the middle of Europe. This is not in line with my values, so I asked the club to resign from the post of coach with immediate effect. “I can not stay on the field training and asking the footballers for professionalism, when a few kilometers away the orders are given to cause suffering to an entire nation.”

However, it is still unclear what will happen to the many other Germans at Lokomotiva. Marvin Compper has worked alongside Lutz Siebrecht as Gisdol’s assistant, and the former central defender will now take over coaching. Sascha Marth, was the goalkeeping coach, Martin Hämmerle, in charge of fitness, Christian Möckel and Matthias Wallenëein managed the scouting, Thomas Zorn acted as sporting director and Lars Kornetka was the managing director until today. Lokomotiv Moscow is currently ranked 7th in the Premier League.
