The German intelligence service expects pro-Russian activities across the country on Monday, May 9, the day Russia traditionally commemorates the Soviet army’s victory over Nazi Germany.
This is “an ideal date to use for Russian propaganda,” Thomas Haldenwang, president of the German Interior Ministry, told the Sunday edition of Die Welt, previously seen by the dpa news agency.
“On this day, pro-Russian activities such as car parades and demonstrations are expected throughout Germany, possibly even showing the ‘Z’ symbol of the Russian occupying army in Ukraine,” Haldenwang said.
The use of the letter “Z” as a symbol is considered a sign of approval for the Russian war.
Security forces in the federal states are also preparing for pro-Russian demonstrations and activities.
According to information from the federal states, there are no indications of an increased willingness to use violence by pro-Russian demonstrators.
“No one should declare solidarity with the criminal rule of Russian President Vladimir Putin,” Finance Minister Christian Lindner told the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung on Saturday.
On Sunday, some countries commemorate the unconditional surrender of the German Wehrmacht to World War II and the liberation of Europe from Nazism.
