Germany has expressed concern today about a ban on vaccine exports from the European Union, while Australia has demanded that Italy reconsider its “rule-breaking” decision, blocking the export of 250,000 Oxford / AstraZeneca vaccines.
German Health Minister Jens Spahn called for caution in global vaccine supply policies, as Italy’s ban on dosing also found support from the European Commission.
“With measures like these, in the long run it is a victory, but we have to be careful not to cause problems in the medium term so as not to disrupt the broad supply chain,” Spahn said.
The Italian government yesterday rejected AstraZeneca’s request to export the doses to Australia, arguing that the Anglo-Swedish company was not meeting its accepted supply obligations within the EU.
The union has often criticized the company for failing to meet its vaccine contract obligations, since announcing a production problem at one of its plants.
Today, French Health Minister Olivier Véran said his government would follow Italy’s example by not allowing them to leave the country.
