The southern German city of Heidelberg was shocked by an unusual event for this quiet community. A young man lost his life and four people were injured when a person opened fire inside a lecture hall in medical school.
The dpa news agency says the author was also a student. So far it is not known that he had any political or religious motive for the extreme gesture. It is learned that the aggressor had with him some long guns.
According to police sources, he later committed suicide.
No information has yet been provided on the identity of the injured and the perpetrator of the attack. Although the perpetrator of the attack is believed to have acted alone, members of a special response unit are checking several buildings in the area while the crime scene is surrounded by police.
On the Neuenheimer Feld campus, the university’s science faculties, part of the university clinic and the botanical garden are located. The university urged students not to go there at least in these moments.
