Germany announced on Sunday, February 28, that travelers coming from the French region of Moselle, will face additional restrictions, due to the increase in cases of coronavirus in this region. The new measures will take effect on March 2.
The disease control agency in Germany said it has added Moselle to the list of areas where new variants of the coronavirus are spreading.
The list also includes the Czech Republic, Portugal and the United Kingdom. Travelers from these countries must submit a negative coronavirus test before entering Germany. Exceptions to this rule are made only by truck drivers and some key workers.
The tightening of restrictions has been criticized by the European Commission, which has described it as disproportionate and has said it is not in line with an EU framework agreement.
In the Moselle region is the French city of Metz. It is located on the border with Germany.
French Minister for European Affairs Clement Beaune said that the French Government regrets this decision of Germany.
He added that France is in negotiations for Germany to ease the measures for the 16,000 Moselle residents working in Germany. Specifically, he said that these French workers should not face daily tests with the PCR method, to enter Germany, saying that it would be easier for these persons to be tested every two or three days and not daily .
