In Germany the fear of a third wave of infections is growing, while the number of cases is growing ahead of a planned relief of some measures to prevent the spread of the virus.
The Robert Koch Institute for Disease Control reported 7,676 new cases on Saturday.
This figure is 1 562 cases higher than a week ago.
The seven-day incidence rate, which measures the number of cases per 100,000 people during that period, has risen to 60.2 nationwide, from 57.7 the day before.
The data is particularly troubling as 10 of Germany’s 16 states planned to open schools tomorrow.
Politicians are increasingly considering giving teachers a higher priority for Covid-19 vaccines given the growing number of cases and a decision could be made earlier this week.
Experts attribute this increase to newer and more transmissible forms of the coronavirus.
