Germany marks such a large increase in citizens with “immigrant backgrounds”, that it is estimated that currently, one in four inhabitants of the country is such.
A recent survey shows that more than a quarter of people currently living in Germany are either born abroad or have at least one immigrant parent.
The latest figures, published by the German statistics agency Destatis, show that “people with a migration background” make up 27.2% of Germany’s population. According to data released by the agency, this is the highest number since 2005, when this survey was conducted for the first time. Of the 82 million people living in Germany, about 22.3 million are born outside of Germany or are of non-German descent.
Most people with a migrant background come from Europe and Asia. About 7.5 million are related to other EU countries, 3.5 million to the Middle East and 1.1 million to Africa. Turkey remains the country with the highest number of migrants in Germany, at 12%, followed by Poland at 10% and Russia at 6%. Theirs.
Turkish is the second most popular language, with 8% of people of migrant descent speaking it at home, followed by Russian with 7% and Arabic with 5%. For many decades the German economy has been heavily dependent on foreign workers, while politicians in recent years have worked to attract even more immigrants to the country.
