Germany blocked Nord Stream 2 after the Russian attack on Ukraine, but now the country finds itself facing a crisis which strengthens the belief in the need for renewable energy.
The largest gas station in Western Europe is located in Lower Saxony, 2000 meters underground.
“It’s as big as 910 football fields and can store enough gas to hold two million homes for a whole year. But the gas level in it does not occupy even three percent of the volume. This level has all the gas tanks of the company Astoria, to which the tank in question belongs“, Says DW.
Astoria is a subsidiary of Russian energy corporation Gazprom and holds more than a third of its gas deposits in Germany.
According to German Economy Minister Robert Habeck, the depots are left empty systematically for two reasons: To keep the price of gas high and to exert pressure: Gas as a political weapon.
About 55 percent of German gas imports come from Russia, in addition to 50 percent of hard coal and more than 30 percent of oil. While a strategic reserve of 90 days has been set by law for oil, there is no such thing for gas and coal.
A mistake, as we know it now, has been acknowledged by the current minister, Robert Habeck. The Federal Ministry of Economy wants to change this as soon as possible.
But if Moscow orders power supplies to be curtailed or even blocked, it could lead to severe shortages by the fall, and even next winter.
