A giant iceberg the size of London has detached from the Antarctic ice sheet, near the British research station.
Researchers stationed there said the iceberg had an area of 1270 square meters and was detached from a 150-meter-thick layer of ice.
This comes almost a decade after scientists first saw the massive cracks formed in this layer.
A crack widened several hundred feet on Friday morning before the iceberg completely detached.
Icebergs usually break away from Antarctica into the ocean in a process accelerated by climate change. However, researchers say that in this case, there is insufficient evidence that climate change has played a significant role. In the coming weeks or months, the iceberg may shift or hit the ground near the top layer.
