Gjirokastra is living a carnival weekend that has returned to tradition only two years ago after being missing for about seven decades. Carnival was once one of the most joyous festivals, a pagan ritual that woke the city from the sluggishness of winter and was dedicated to purifying and resuming life.
According to the researcher Ilir Lluri, only four historical photographs remain from the city from the beginning of the last century, but the historical memory of the holiday that had a completely local identity is being documented.
Carnivals that have certainly changed in visual presentation but not in content this year are bringing hundreds of visitors to Gjirokastra. The city is offering a parade of masks, traditional music, music bands for the evening hours, seasonal cuisine, and a variety of outdoor activities.
Tour operators also drew attention last year for not publishing the calendar of activities on time, which makes events such as less commercial carnivals for tourism.
2 years ago, the tourist season started almost in July for Gjirokastra, it was short and with minimal income, while this year the visitors are arriving since the beginning of March, which leaves room for more optimism.
