Alphabet, the parent company of the platform, YouTube, has said that the Russian state media will no longer be able to benefit from advertising on this network. This means that Russia Today (RT) and other channels can not make money from ads on YouTube and other sites owned by Alphabet.
The company has said that these media will not even be able to buy ads through Google’s services.
A spokesman attributed the decision to the “emergency situation” and said Alphabet would “take further action if necessary”.
The decision comes after Ukraine’s Minister of Digital Transformation, Mykhailo Fedorov, said he had asked the YouTube platform to block Russian propaganda.
State-owned media – especially RT – make millions of dollars a year from YouTube ads and other Google services.
Facebook and Twitter have already blocked ads from Russia.
Russian authorities have restricted access to both platforms.
