A Russian court in Moscow on Friday fined Google $ 100 million. The sentence was handed down for the company’s failure to delete content prohibited by domestic law, a sentence that reflects Russia’s efforts to increase pressure on large technology companies.
The court ruled that Google repeatedly neglected to remove the banned content and ordered the company to pay an administrative fine of about 7.2 billion rubles (about $ 98.4 million).
Google said it would review the court documents and then decide on the next steps.
Russian authorities have steadily increased pressure on social media platforms, accusing them of failing to clean up content related to drug, weapons and explosives abuse. Earlier this year, authorities blamed technology companies for not deleting reports of illegal protests in support of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, who is currently in prison.
Russian courts have previously imposed smaller fines on Google, Facebook and Twitter this year. The Moscow court ruling on Friday marked the first time the amount of the fine was calculated on the basis of income.
Russian authorities have also demanded that foreign tech giants store the personal data of Russian citizens on servers in Russia, threatening them with possible fines or bans if they do not comply with the requirements.
