The eight people suspected of killing 19-year-old Alkis Kampanos on Monday afternoon will face charges against them in the Prosecutor’s Office. They are all members of the same association of PAOK football fans, known in Thessaloniki not only for the name “Gate 4”, but also acts of violence both inside and outside the stadium.
The suspects were arrested in a well-organized covert police operation following the issuance of 10 arrest warrants. It is learned that for all the arrested persons there is evidence that they took part in the attack on some young people in the Harilaou neighborhood of the city last week.
Police have stated that their traces have been identified at the scene and the seized weapons of the crime.
Most of them, seven Greeks and one Albanian, aged 20 to 23, have been prosecuted before.
Also, the police have announced the search for two other persons, a 20-year-old man of Albanian origin who left for Albania through Kapshtica a day after the murder of the 19-year-old and he is said to be issued an international arrest warrant.
He is considered a close friend of the 23-year-old of Albanian origin who was first arrested on charges of killing the 19-year-old and who today goes back to the Prosecutor’s Office to face other charges.
According to the police, the two of them, in March 2019, had attacked together two Aris fans in the same place where he was killed, Alkis Kampanos.
It is learned that Prime Minister Mitsotakis has called an urgent meeting with several members of the cabinet to take a series of measures aimed at ending fan violence.
He has proposed closing down these cheerleading groups, sports associations that are illegal and using hooligans and people with criminal records, causing violent confrontations almost every week.
Last year alone, more than 250 hooligan attacks were recorded in Greece, while more than 200 people were arrested, but only one was convicted. Given this situation, Greece can propose amendments to the Criminal Code, in relation to these acts of violence in the stadium and outside them.
