Greece will send its army tanks to Ukraine replacing them with German tanks. The news was announced by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, after today’s meeting with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Brussels.
According to Olaf Scholz, Berlin has agreed with Athens to send to Ukraine weapons from the stock of the former Warsaw Pact, which will then be replaced by the relevant German weapons systems.
A statement from the Greek Ministry of Defense later stated that a number of Russian BMP-1 tanks from the 1960s were being sent to Ukraine, replacing them with German Marder tanks from the 1970s.
According to sources close to the Greek Ministry of Defense, these “tanks” may not be considered state-of-the-art, but Ukrainians can use them immediately.
Meanwhile, all Greek opposition parties have criticized Prime Minister Mitsotakis for the secrecy with which he has agreed with the German government and for the fact how much and dangerously Greece is implicated in Russia’s war with Ukraine by sending several weapons.
The BMP-1 tanks in question, also considered to be armored personnel carriers of the military personnel, are currently operating in military units in Evros and on the islands. They are considered of lower operational value to the Greek army due to their age.
Greece has sent RPG anti-tank missiles, Stinger anti-aircraft missiles, Kalashnikovs, 155-mm anti-aircraft missiles, approximately 7 million 7.62-mm bullets and RM70 missiles to Ukraine since February.
