Greece is in urgent need of manpower. Sources from the Greek Ministry of Labor, said that entire sectors of the economy are in deep crisis due to lack of staff and qualified personnel, while many projects have gone out of estimates, precisely because of the drastic increase in labor costs. .
Significant shortages of labor have been observed in the tourism sector, where the urgent need to enable this year’s tourist season is estimated at 50-70,000 employees.
There is also a significant shortage of labor in the agriculture, livestock and aquaculture sectors, where the needs are estimated at over 50,000 jobs, while the construction sector is expected to collapse due to the lack of 150-160,000 employees.
Other sectors of the economy also have large shortages, where labor shortages have not only raised prices to the maximum, but have stopped strategic investments in areas such as the construction of large infrastructure projects and large tourist complexes.
Large international business companies have postponed their investment projects in Greece, precisely because of the lack of qualified staff.
The situation seems to be deteriorating also due to the emigration of thousands of Greeks of working age to England, Germany, Norway and Sweden, countries where pay and working conditions are better than in Greece.
The urgent needs for employees have so far been met by workers from the Balkan countries that were part of the European Union such as Bulgaria and Romania, but now the free arm from these countries, but also from Albania and Northern Macedonia, has been moved directly to European countries. which has greatly increased the difficulties of finding labor in the country.
The creation of a special program to allow migrants from North African countries or the Far East is envisaged as an urgent solution, but so far negotiations with North African countries seem to have stalled due to the security situation in these countries, while it seems that countries like Pakistan and India that have labor, do not want to have labor hemorrhages, afraid that the opening of borders will create problems for them in the future.
The Greek government is preparing a draft law on the creation of special programs to enable immigrants to enter the country with work visas, but it seems that this program is also circulating in the drawers of the bureaucracy in the relevant ministries.
