Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dhendias arrived in Odessa at noon on Sunday to head a humanitarian aid mission in the southern Ukrainian port city, the foreign ministry said. Humanitarian aid will be handed over to the city authorities.
Dhendias, who has stated that a plan to establish a continuous mechanism for the distribution of aid from Greece is being considered, first went to the Greek Consulate General in Odessa, which has resumed its operation, and then to the museum house of the Society of Friends. one of the most important organizations that prepared the Greek uprisings against the Ottoman Empire in 1821.
Earlier, Dhendias arrived in Chisinau, Moldova, and from there drove to Odessa to head a humanitarian mission in the Ukrainian city. He was accompanied by Admiral Alexandros Diakopoulos, Director of International Development Assistance at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Greek Consul in Odessa Dimitris Dohtsis.
The Greek Foreign Minister had announced last month that he planned to lead a humanitarian aid mission in the besieged martyred city of Mariupol in Ukraine, where thousands of homogeneous Greeks live, but intense fighting there changed the destination to Odessa.
At least 10 homogenous Greeks have been killed and several wounded since Russia began attacking Mariupol. More than 150 Greek citizens have been evacuated from the region, according to official Athens.
