A descendant of the personal doctor of the Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler has published several personal letters revealing how Hitler was terrified when treated for voice problems.
Carl Otto von Eicken – German specialist in nose, throat and ear – has treated Hitler several times during his 10 years of service since 1935.
The letters were discovered by Robert Deopgen, von Eicken’s great-grandson, who found them while searching the family archives for an educational project.
It testifies to Hitler’s horror of serious illness. “If something goes wrong, I absolutely must know,” Hitler told the doctor after their first consultation in May 1935, according to the documents.
They demonstrate the importance he attached to his voice, which he used in propaganda speeches to increase support for the Nazi cause.
Another shows how von Eicken advised Hitler to take vacations to protect his voice.
In no case von Eicken mentioned the fact that he was caring for a man believed to be responsible for millions of deaths.
When asked by Russian investigators why he had not killed Hitler, von Eicken replied: “I was his doctor and not the killer.”
Adolf Hitler is believed to have killed himself in a bunker in Berlin in 1945 after being surrounded by the Soviet Red Army.
But many theories are circulating that say the Nazi may have fled to Latin America as happened to many German army chiefs at the end of the war.
