An early morning balloon flight over the Australian city of Melbourne after a sudden turn today when the giant vehicle crashed into the roof of an apartment building.
Reports said no one was injured in the incident being filmed by passenger Jayde Magookin as he and 12 others on board escaped from the roofs and tops of the trees where they had fallen.
Vehicle pilot Nick Brau said the balloon was brand new, but still did not fly properly.
Magookin, 34, said the clash was “terrible” but after it ended without consequences, the protagonists now see its humorous side.
The balloon was on its first flight over the Australian city and ended up unfolding on two roofs of buildings in the southern part of the city, while its basket lay in a car park.
Pilot Brau had managed to avoid electric poles and cables but some buildings had suffered damage as he struggled to regain height.
The pilot told the media that he could not understand what went wrong as he added that “when such things happen the experience is unsatisfactory.”
Brown said it’s his crash in 27 years of flying hot air balloons, and passengers appreciated his ability to call for calm and landing without serious consequences.
The vehicle was part of a fleet of six balloons, while the other five smoothly completed their itinerary.
Magookin said he noticed something was wrong as the balloon was not gaining the height of others. He and his wife had booked the two-week walk as a celebration after Magookin had recovered from a heart attack.
“It seems to me that the series of bad luck continues,” he told the media, although he still refused to give up balloon flights.
