Hundreds of Ukrainian doctors have attended an online war surgery course. The course, based in the UK, was organized by Dr. David Nott, who has taught conflict health care around the world, and by Dr. Henry Marsh, a neurosurgeon with deep ties to Ukraine.
It took place on a 12-hour phone call to Zoom, during which Dr Nott and Dr Marsh went through ballistics and burns, neurosurgery and vascular surgery.
According to David Nott, war surgery is different from anything a doctor has seen before. In difficult war conditions, decisions on the ground are under extreme pressure of time and resources.
Dr. Marsh also told participants, “Luckily you will not need this knowledge, but it is best to prepare for the worst.”
According to the UN, so far, at least 364 civilians have been killed in Ukraine, and 759 others wounded, in 11 days of occupation by Russian troops. Although the figures are likely to be higher than reported.
