Zsuzsa Hegedus, member of the close circle of the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, has resigned after he has positioned himself against “peoples of mixed race”.
Hegedus, who has known the nationalist Orban for 20 years, described the speech as “pure Nazi text”, according to Hungarian media.
The International Auschwitz Committee for Holocaust Survivors has considered the speech as “dangerous”.
Orban’s spokesman said that the media had misinterpreted the comments.
Orban gave the speech on Saturday in a region of Romania that has a large Hungarian community.
He said that European peoples should be free to join each other, but mixing with non-Europeans creates “a world of mixed races”.
“We have the will to mix with each other, but we do not want to become peoples of mixed races”, he said.
Orban’s stance against migration is already known, but for Hegedus, Saturday’s speech crossed the line.
Orban has also spoken about the war in Ukraine, saying that the West’s support for this country has failed, sanctions against Russia are not working and that a peace deal should be a priority.
Despite receiving large amounts of European funding, Orbán’s Hungarian government frequently clashes with the European Union on issues related to the rule of law, such as migration and media rights.
In the past, Orban has enjoyed good relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin and is the only EU leader to publicly criticize Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine on February 24.
He calls the war a “special military operation” to demilitarize Ukraine.
The West has responded to Russia, hitting the economy of this country with harsh sanctions.
