Hungary will veto a possible proposal to impose sanctions on Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Serb member of the presidency, Milorad Dodik.
The statement was made by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijarto after the new head of German diplomacy, Annalena Baerbock, announced such a scenario on her official Facebook profile.
“We are concerned about such statements, because Bosnia and Herzegovina is close to us, maintaining stability and peace in the country is our basic security interest. Berlin is further away, but not so far away that you can never fly to Banja Luka from there. Negotiations. Talk to Serbs. With them, not for them. Maybe this will help you understand the situation“, Said Szijarto.
He added that the EU can only impose sanctions by unanimous decision of all member states.
“And just to be clear, Hungary will not give its support to any sanctions against the Serb leader in BiH, Milorad Dodik. If there is such a proposal, we will veto it. Dialogue, not sanctions, this is what EU policy should do about the Western Balkans in the future“, Stressed the Hungarian minister.
Last week, the new German government called on Brussels to take action against Milorad Dodik over his efforts to oust Republika Srpska and the decision to withdraw from the state level.
