In the show “Open”, Prime Minister Edi Rama commented on the 11th question of the National Consultation that has to do with Albania’s application for membership in the European Union.
“Albania’s membership in the European Union is related to the membership of Northern Macedonia. There are people who say that Albania’s application for EU membership should be separated from that of Northern Macedonia, so that our country is appreciated for its merits. Others say we should continue to wait for Northern Macedonia. What do you think? ”, It is said in the question addressed to the citizens.
Among other things, the question explains that an EU member state has unresolved bilateral issues with Northern Macedonia, therefore blocks the start of negotiations for its membership in the European Council with a veto, blocking Albania as well, since the applications for both countries are treated as a single dossier at the European Council table.
Prime Minister Edi Rama said that they want the public opinion in case France can not convince Bulgaria to pave the way for the start of negotiations. According to him, it is reasonable to think of changing the line and knocking on the door to separate Albania from Northern Macedonia.
Rama: In the case of the Open Balkans, it is an initiative that has made progress in some respects that is partly important. There are other things that are ahead and in case there is popular opposition, we would open a discussion with people. This is due to the fact that this counseling is done at the beginning of the third term.
As for the division with Northern Macedonia, there is a lot at hand. We have had the opportunity to go to every door and every debate with the Europeans and say what business do we have that keeps us blocked and the policies we have today that we have agreed not to talk about, not to accept division and to walk in parallel for the sake of a decision making set in parallel. In case France cannot convince Bulgaria to open the way, it is reasonable to think that we will change the line and knock on the door to separate Albania from Macedonia. It is different to have the feeling that at this point you are with the Albanians. When we talk about Northern Macedonia, there is a state-building population there and you can be sure that Albania is in a foreign policy position that they have never had.
