The President of the United States, Joe Biden, and the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, had a telephone conversation with the specific purpose of avoiding the Third World War, because, as Joe Biden said, “when the United States and Russia are involved, it is a world conflict.”
The conversation between the two presidents started around 5pm and lasted a little over an hour. The White House announced that there were no positive developments. Biden has reportedly warned Putin that Russia will pay dearly if it attacks Ukraine. The US and its allies will hit Russia hard and the consequences will be severe for this country, said the president of the United States.
Putin also spoke on Saturday with French President Emmanuel Macron for an hour and 40 minutes. A “sincere dialogue is no longer equivalent to an escalation” of tension, the French president said. Antony Blinken, Secretary of State and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also had a telephone conversation where the latter had assured the American diplomat that Russia would not invade Ukraine.
Lavrov told Blinken that news that Russia would invade Ukraine was US provocations and aimed at spreading anti-Russian propaganda. Meanwhile an explosion was heard during Saturday afternoon in eastern Ukraine. The news circulated on social media and local media, which reported that a loud bang was heard in the territory of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic.
Italy has urged its citizens to leave Ukraine urgently, while the Dutch national airline has canceled all direct flights to Ukraine starting Saturday evening.
