Pakistan’s ousted prime minister Imran Khan has won a landslide victory in a by-election in the eastern province of Punjab.
Preliminary results gave his PTI party 15 seats out of 20 on the ballot, while incumbent Prime Minister Shebhaz Sharif’s 13-party alliance, Nawaz Muslim League, got just four.
The result was a major blow to power in his homeland and gives another boost to Khan’s demand for national elections.
Defense Minister Khawaja Asif congratulated the PTI on its “historic” victory and other government figures said they respected the vote’s result.
The election was seen by many as a test for Khan, who has led mass protests since being ousted in a no-confidence vote in April.
Khan blames the movement on the intervention of the United States of America.
Khan has said earlier that he was threatened with removal from office if he did not accept more friendly policies towards Washington.
The cricketer-turned-politician blames Sharif for rising inflation and prices that have reached record highs, according to IMF recommendations.
Pakistan last week signed a debt restructuring deal with the IMF to pay high energy import prices.
Elections should normally be held in October, but Khan said snap elections are the way out of the crisis.
