Three of the world’s most spectacular mountain ranges intersect in northern Pakistan – the Himalayas, the Hindu Khush and the Karakoram – forming the largest ice reservoir outside the poles.
The country’s mountainous north is home to more than 7,000 glaciers – more than any region outside the poles – but frequent and intense heat waves linked to climate change are causing them to melt, increasing the risk of flash floods, as also happened in the Pakistani village of Javed Rahi.
The flood wave swept away nine houses and damaged many others.
“Women and children were screaming. Several other people were trying to save household items. It was horrible”, says a resident.
“We lost everything within two hours. We lost our land and houses”.
“Climate change is a natural disaster, but I think humans are also contributing to it. We are destroying nature. This area is glacial and we have conquered it.”
Pakistan is the eighth most vulnerable country in the world to extreme weather caused by climate change, according to the Global Climate Risk Index
The country is experiencing earlier, more frequent heat waves, with temperatures already reaching 50 degrees Celsius.
