Lyudmila Makey is the first Ukrainian journalist to leave the war zone to come to Kosovo.
She left the family behind to continue working from a safer place.
“When I first heard about Kosovo, I found it interesting to come and see what life is like in Kosovo. I have everything I need for work, phone, computer, internet to talk to colleagues and show what I want. “Believe me, not all my colleagues have this opportunity, especially not those in Russian-controlled territory.” said Lyudmila Makey.
Makey said he was forced to leave his homeland, as journalists are also the target of the Russian aggressor.
“Since the beginning of the war, more than 21 journalists have died at the hands of the Russian occupiers, not only Ukrainians, but also Lithuanians, Americans, Irish and others. “More than 25 of my colleagues have disappeared in Mariupol, nothing is known about their fate.” said Lyudmila Makey
The Ukrainian journalist says that she expects other journalists to come and cover the truth about the war in Ukraine, without the risk that one day they may die.
Lydumila Makey is the first journalist to come to Kosovo as part of the European Center for Freedom of the Press and Media program “Journalists in Residence”. Three other Ukrainian journalists are in the verification procedure to come to Kosovo.
Kosovo in cooperation with the Association of Journalists of Kosovo, ECPMF and the European Federation of Journalists, hosts 20 Ukrainian journalists, providing them with working and living conditions.
