The start of the second semester of schools in Greece, which has started according to the new protocols with three tests per week by students and teachers, has revealed a bitter truth, the great spread of coronavirus in children.
In one of the largest tests performed in the country after 1.6 million tests performed on students and teachers, about 16,000 coronavirus infections were recorded on Monday, of which 2,300 teachers and nearly 10,000 on Tuesday morning.
It had been more than a week since the government, the opposition and specialists were involved in a debate over whether or not to reopen schools, at a time when the fifth wave of the pandemic in Greece is at its peak and cases of infections have over 12 days ranging from 25,000 to 50,000.
Also the number of victims yesterday increased, going to 85, while hospitalizations have gone on average from 400 a week ago, to 600 per day.
The opening of schools has been accompanied in many cases by the lack of free tests that the government gives to children to perform three times a week, according to the new rules, and if a positive case is found in a classroom, then all children together with teachers will perform tests every day of that week.
The government has also announced the hiring of about 4,800 teachers as numerous infections have caused severe shortages of educational staff.
It is noted that in Greece, from next Monday, all persons over 60 years of age who have not been vaccinated will pay 100 euros every month, while specialists and the government are discussing when the mandatory vaccination will be given to persons over 50 years of age.
