In a meeting with the leadership of the Democratic Union of the Greek National Minority-Omonia, the leader of the Greek opposition Syriza Alexis Tsipras underlined his support for the “fair demand”, as he called it, “the restoration of the national pension for the Greek national minority” in Albania.
During the meeting, where he was accompanied by the chairwoman of Labor and Social Affairs, Mariliza Xenogiannakopoulou and the person in charge of homogeneity issues Theodora Tzakri, Mr. Tsipras spoke of “the injustices experienced by the minority during the period of aid memoranda after 2012, when the right of older minorities to have a national pension was restricted.
“I want to assure you that now that the country, thanks to our efforts, is not under the supervision of creditors, we support the correction of injustices, beyond what we consider right, we consider as our obligation, especially in a difficult time to support the Greek community “, he said and referred to the two amendments submitted by SYRIZA-SP which were not accepted by the Mitsotakis government.
He stressed that “the issue of national pension, which is also an issue of equality, has not been resolved despite the promises of Prime Minister Mitsotakis. Tsipras noted that the amendment voted by the Syriza government for 2019 has never been implemented after two and a half years. The opposition leader said that during SYRIZA’s rule, Greek-Albanian relations were promoted and the right to self-determination and property were guaranteed as conditions for Albania’s EU membership.
Tsipras also stressed that “northern Epirotes in both Albania and Greece should be supported, as they are a very important part of Hellenism and everything should be done for them to stay there in their homes.”
For their part, the representatives of the Greek minority, Vangjel Dule, Vasil Kajo and Jorgos Xhomakas thanked Mr. Tsipras for the practical support to the problems they faced both during the SYRIZA government and today. They stressed that the situation they face, as a Greek national minority in Albania, is difficult not only because of the circumstances, such as the pandemic, but also because of the attitude of the Albanian government. They stressed that they are determined to continue the efforts because as they have expressed – “it is a challenge for all Hellenism to stay in ancestral homes”.
The issue of property, which concerns all areas where Hellenism lives and especially the coastal area of Himara, is still the same, even more intense, as the entire property system is being challenged with arbitrary illegal decisions to the detriment of the rightful owners. , who are mainly of Greek origin – said the representatives of the Greek minority in Albania
