Albanians who have chosen to emigrate to Ukraine or even to study can be counted on their fingers. One of them is Albani, who after graduating from the polytechnic, has been living and working in Ukraine for six years, as a sales manager for a Belgian company.
In Kiev he built his family after marrying a Ukrainian girl.
Top Channel envoy to Kiev, journalist Muhamed Veliu met him a few meters away from Maidan Square where in 2014 the EuroMaidan revolution took place to overthrow pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych.
Naturally, the conversation is about the situation in Ukraine today and how it affects Albani and his family’s daily life.
In an interview for Top Channel, Alban Cali tells the experience of an Albanian in a country which has become the focus of the whole world, after the fear of invasion by Russia.
Muhamed Veliu: You are among the few Albanians living in Kiev, how did you experience all this tense situation of recent days?
Alban Cali: The situation is tense following the local and international news as well. But also Top Channel in the news in Albania.
Muhamed Veliu: Is the government here trying to minimize the negative effect this situation produces?
Alban Cali: This is very true, if you follow local and international news there is a kind of imbalance but I think it is one of the main things that the government in Ukraine is doing to maintain a calm in the population.
Muhamed Veliu: You work with Ukrainian colleagues, what do they think about the situation? Are they involved in training to defend their homeland from a possible attack by Russia?
Alban Cali: There are colleagues who are tense, there are those who do not follow the news so as not to be tense, but there are also those who have joined and registered for the territorial defense of Kiev.
Muhamed Veliu: You are married to a Ukrainian girl, have you considered returning to Albania in case of an armed conflict?
Alban Cali: Yes. The wife thinks that in case of an armed explosion, Albania remains the salvation.
Muhamed Veliu: There is a community of old Albanians living in Ukraine, what do they do and how do they experience such a situation?
Alban Cali: Some of those I speak to and have contacts with, living in Kiev, have been quiet, but a large part of the citizens of Ukraine do not believe that a military conflict will occur.
