Iran has made it clear it is prepared to take action toward implementing the 2015 nuclear deal as the United States lifts sanctions on the country.
“Iran is ready to take compensatory measures, based on the nuclear deal, and to meet its obligations once the illegal US sanctions are lifted and the policy of threats and pressure is abandoned,” Iranian President Hassan Rohani said on March 7. Rohani made the remarks as he acknowledged Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney, who is working to secure the nuclear deal. Ireland is not part of the agreement, but Dublin has a role as a mediator for the implementation of the agreement.
Rohani has criticized European countries, signatories to the agreement – Britain, France and Germany – for lack of commitment to the agreement, saying Iran “is the only party that has paid the price.”
US President Joe Biden has signaled his readiness to implement the agreement, but insists that Iran initially return to its nuclear commitments. Former US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the agreement in 2018, which provides for the restriction of Iran’s nuclear program, in exchange for the lifting of sanctions. The Trump administration had said the deal did not include Iran’s ballistic missile program, and support for regional groups, which Washington considers terrorist. Following the withdrawal from the agreement in 2018, the United States reinstated knee-jerk sanctions on the Islamic republic’s economy, and it responded by gradually abandoning several points of the agreement.
