Iran’s foreign minister said today that the lifting of sanctions by Washington “is good but not enough.”
Iran today welcomed the lifting of some US sanctions imposed on its nuclear program but said the move was still “insufficient”.
The U.S. said the sanctions were lifted as part of the Biden administration’s efforts to bring Iran back to the talks of reviving the 2015 nuclear deal.
“The lifting of some of the sanctions may translate into goodwill, the true meaning of the word, but it should be mentioned that what happens on paper is good but not enough,” Minister Amir-Abdollahian told the state-run INSA news agency.
“Goodwill means in our view that something tangible is happening on the ground,” Amir-Abdollahian added, explaining that Tehran seeks assurances in the economic, political and legal sectors that the United States will not withdraw from the agreement unilaterally. as happened earlier.
The agreement signed between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, plus Germany and the EU, provided for the oversight of Tehran’s nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of sanctions. But President Donald Trump’s administration pulled out of the deal in 2018, claiming Iran was not meeting the conditions, and heavy sanctions were reinstated.
Yesterday the US State Department lifted some of the sanctions by allowing foreign companies to engage in civilian projects at the Bushehr nuclear plant in Iran.
The lifting of sanctions is intended to “assist in the reciprocal resumption of implementation of the international nuclear agreement and set out the framework for the implementation of Iran’s obligations,” the State Department said in a statement.
“If the parties are ready to lift the sanctions, the ground for reaching an agreement is ready,” Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said earlier.
Discussions on reviving the agreement are currently taking place in Vienna, between negotiators from Britain, China, France, Germany and Russia.
