Shiite leader Muqtada al-Sadr’s Sadr group, which won the election in Iraq, decided to freeze negotiations to form a government and boycott the parliamentary election session.
The chairman of the Sadr Movement Parliamentary Group, Hasan Azari, said in a press conference that “We have decided to suspend the negotiations for the formation of a government with all political groups in accordance with the instructions of our leader Muqtada es-Sadr.”
Azari said they would boycott the session to be held on February 7 for the presidential election.
Shiite leader Sadr’s group, known for its distancing stance on Iran, won the election by sending 73 deputies to the 329-seat parliament in the October 10, 2021 general election.
Sadr was negotiating to form a government, especially with the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and Sunnis.
