After his meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov failed to produce the expected result of easing tensions over Ukraine, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken hinted that America could give up, offering a meeting between Vladimir Putin himself and Joe Biden.
“If a confrontation between the two presidents to talk, to engage realistically and to advance the efforts to escalate the situation would prove useful and productive, I think we are fully prepared for such a thing.”, said the American chief diplomat.
Moscow has not yet responded to his invitation. From the beginning of his meeting with Lavrov, it became clear from both sides that expectations for progress were low and so it really turned out.
Blinken and Lavrov, however, said that something was achieved nonetheless, and that was the fact that “we are on a clearer path in terms of understanding each other’s concerns.” Press secretary Jen Psaki said President Joe Biden will go to Camp David this weekend to consult with his national security advisers about the situation and provide a written response to Moscow’s proposals next week.
“We will formulate in writing the serious concerns we and our allies and other partners have about Russia’s actions, as well as ideas on how we can strengthen each other’s sense of security in the future.”, she said.
The positions of Washington and Moscow on the crisis over Ukraine continue to remain unchanged.
