Finland and Sweden could soon join NATO, a move that is likely to anger Moscow.
NATO officials told CNN that discussions on Sweden and Finland’s membership in the bloc have become extremely serious since the Russian invasion.
Senior US State Department officials said the issue came up at this week’s NATO foreign summit, attended by foreign ministers from Stockholm and Helsinki.
According to them, the discussions underscore the extent to which the occupation of Russian President Vladimir Putin has served only to revitalize and unite the NATO alliance, the exact opposite of Putin’s stated goals before the start of the war.
The Russian president had demanded that NATO stop eastward expansion and admission of new members, accusing the bloc of threatening Russian security. Instead, NATO has increased its support for Ukraine and is preparing to welcome new members.
