Israel on Monday called on its citizens to avoid Istanbul or return home if found there.
The call comes after May 30, when Israel warned its citizens not to travel to Turkey because of alleged Iranian threats to kill or kidnap Israelis.
Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid said a “major effort” by Israeli security forces had saved “Israeli lives in recent weeks” and thanked the Turkish government for its contribution.
He gave no further details. An Israeli security official told Reuters that Turkey had arrested several suspected “operatives” of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in Iran.
“We are urging the Israelis not to fly to Istanbul – and unless you have a vital reason, do not fly to Turkey. “If you are already in Istanbul, return to Israel as soon as possible,” Lapid said in a televised statement.
“These terrorist threats are directed at Israeli holidaymakers. “They are selecting, randomly but deliberately, Israeli citizens with the intention of abducting or killing them,” he said.
“I want to send a message from here to the Iranians as well. Whoever hurts the Israelites will not be able to escape. “Israel will take them, no matter where they are.”
Tehran has vowed to retaliate against Israel, which it blames for the May 22 assassination of Hassan Sayad Khodai, a colonel of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in Iran, who was shot dead at the wheel of his car by two people on a motorcycle.
Israel neither acknowledged nor denied responsibility for the murder allegations. Israel has accused Khodain of organizing attacks against Israelis around the world.
Turkey is a famous destination for Israelis.
The two countries have improved their relations after more than a decade of tension.
