Israel is ready to use its “right to self-defense” to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said in a meeting with International Atomic Energy Agency Director Rafael Grossi.
At a meeting in Jerusalem on June 3, Bennett accused Tehran of deceiving the world about its nuclear activities.
He said he was concerned about “Iran’s continued progress towards developing nuclear weapons,” said Bennett’s office.
The Israeli prime minister noted the urgent need to mobilize the international community to “prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.”
Bennett said Israel prefers diplomacy, but retains the right to self-defense and action in the event of the international community failing.
Israeli Prime Minister Bennett’s warning comes amid halted efforts to revive the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers aimed at preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
This important agreement lifted most of the sanctions in exchange for curbing Iran’s nuclear activities.
The deal failed after former US President Donald Trump pulled the United States out of the deal and reinstated tough sanctions on Iran.
Efforts by US President Joe Biden’s administration to revive the deal began in Vienna in April last year but have since failed.
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi announced in April that his country would resume nuclear development activities because negotiations to revive Tehran’s nuclear deal with world powers have stalled.
In celebration of Iran’s state nuclear technology day on April 9, Raisi said the Iranian administration would support accelerating research on “peaceful” nuclear technology.
Israel was a staunch opponent of the 2015 nuclear deal and welcomed the Trump administration’s unilateral withdrawal from the deal.
Israel is believed to be the only nuclear power in the Middle East, but that country refuses to confirm or deny that it has nuclear weapons.
