Israel has said it plans to become the first country to offer a fourth dose of the coronavirus vaccine as it prepares for a wave of infections triggered by the Omicron variant of the virus.
Pandemic experts in Israel have recommended a fourth dose for people over the age of 60 and health workers.
Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett welcomed the plan and told officials to start preparations.
The announcement comes after Israel confirmed the first death of a patient infected with the Omicron variant.
The Ministry of Health in this country has identified at least 340 cases with this variant.
The decision on the fourth dose must be approved by senior health officials, but the prime minister’s office has told the British broadcaster, the BBC, that it hopes the fourth dose will be given four months after the third dose.
Although Israel is among the countries with the fastest-growing vaccination campaign, only about 63 percent of the population of 9.3 million have received both doses.
This is justified by the fact that the population of Israel is relatively young and one third of the population is under 14 years old.
To increase the rate of vaccination, Israel now also vaccinates children from the age of five.
Since the pandemic broke out, Israel has registered more than 1.36 million cases of coronavirus infection.
According to Johns Hopins University, about 8,200 people have died from the virus in Israel.
