The volcanic eruption in Tonga, which triggered a tsunami, was hundreds of times more powerful than the atomic bombs dropped by the United States on Hiroshima during World War II, the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has said.
The eruption has “disappeared” a volcanic island north of the Tongan capital, Nuku’aloda, NASA said.
Tonga has said more than four-fifths of the population has been affected by the tsunami and volcanic ash.
Three people have been declared dead as a result of the tsunami.
Prior to the eruption, the volcanic island was composed of two separate islands, which merged in 2015.
NASA has said the explosion has been so powerful that the new earth has disappeared.
The sheer volume of ash, gases and debris blasts have turned into major challenges for Tongan officials.
Following the volcanic eruption and tsunami, there have been concerns that water sources have been contaminated by ash, increasing the risk for cholera and diarrhea.
However, in recent tests it has been found that the water is drinkable.
Volcanic ash and emissions continue to be a problem.
Exposure to this environment can cause breathing problems, affect the cardiovascular system and irritate the lungs, eyes and skin.
