Great damage is being reported in Tonga as a result of the tsunami that hit the Pacific island, but communication problems are hampering the assessment process.
The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haʻapai volcano erupted in the state on Sunday, about 65 kilometers north of the capital, Nuku’alofa.
The blast, which was also felt in the United States, caused waves larger than a meter, which collided in Tonga.
So far, there have been no official reports of injuries or deaths.
Relatives and friends of the British woman, Angela Glover, have said she is missing.
In some posts on social networks, they have said that the woman has taken the waves.
Internet or telephone communications are extremely limited, making it impossible to report on the real situation.
“Great damage has been reported in the western Gulf of Tongtapu,” a New Zealand High Commissioner in Tonga said in a Facebook post.
“A large layer of dust continues to be seen over Tongatapu,” the commission said.
New Zealand Television Pacific correspondent Barbara Dreaver said in a Facebook post that it would take “at least another two weeks before international calls and the internet are operational again” due to the damage caused by the volcano. ./REL/
