An Italian lawyer whose sister died of AIDS has helped imprison the man who knowingly infected her, after pursuing her and discovering that she had infected four other women earlier.
Luigi De Domenico, 58, was found guilty of murder last week and sentenced to 22 years in prison by a court in Messina, Sicily, thanks to the tireless efforts of lawyer Silvia Gambadoro, 54, who had set herself the goal of before justice the murderer of her sister.
Silvia’s sister, Stefania, died of the AIDS virus in 2017, at the age of 45, when her weight reached 35 kg, leaving behind her 12-year-old son.
In court it was said that De Domenico had been receiving anti-HIV medication since 2010 and knew he was positive with the infectious disease, even when he was with Stefania.
Stefania had been in a relationship with De Domenico from 2005 to 2008, and he was the father of her son.
She was diagnosed with AIDS in late 2016, as the severe symptoms of fatigue and weight loss had started in 2015.
She was initially diagnosed with anorexia and leukemia, as specialists failed to discover what was the disease that was killing her.
Speaking of the everyday The Republic“The search for the truth was a task for me, for Stephanie, for our two parents, and for my nephew, who was forced to grow up prematurely,” said Silvia.
“We shared everything, even the decision to denounce his father, he knew that no trial would bring his mother back.”
The daily reported that Silvia, who suspected De Domenico as soon as she discovered her sister’s diagnosis, had called him in 2016.
She had asked him if he was HIV positive but her husband had denied it.
Silvia made her first complaint in 2017, a month after her sister’s death.
Shortly afterwards Silvia had received an anonymous letter from a woman saying she had tested positive for HIV after being in a relationship with De Domenico.
Investigators found that both women had been infected by the suspect.
A woman in Bologna had denounced him but De Domenico was acquitted on the grounds that he did not know he was infected, writes The Times.
Silvia says De Domenico was a handsome man and manipulator with women, who had isolated her sister from family members.
She says De Domenico “let her die”.
Silvia told the Messina court that De Domenico had mentioned that a previous partner had died of cancer in 1990. But investigators found that the woman had also died of AIDS.
De Domenico was found guilty of murder by the Messina court because he had infected Stefanian with a conscience.
Speaking to the Sicilian daily l’Eco del Sud Silvia said that “prejudice and indifference are the main elements of this tragedy” as professionals had not properly diagnosed her sister.
She said: “In the two years of examinations, the symptoms showed how Stefania was suffering, but since she was a lawyer they believed that ‘a respectable woman’ could not have been infected with HIV.”
According to La Repubblica a hematologist and a rheumatologist have been charged with negligent homicide.
Silvia told l’Eco del Sud that she was happy to tell her nephew the truth and to fight the prejudice that those infected with HIV have a ‘low reputation’.
