An Italian tourist has been fatally attacked by a shark off the coast of an Caribbean island, local reports have recently reported.
The 56-year-old victim was identified by local media as Antonio Roseto Degli Abruzzi, who was swimming with a diving tube near a rock on Colombian island of San Andrés at the weekend, when he was bitten on the leg by a 2.5-meter-long shark, according to reports.
Authorities said he died of blood loss.
The incident took place in the area called La Piscinita (Small Pool), a place quite frequented for underwater panoramas for diving.
San Andres is located 235 miles off the coast of Nicaragua and about 470 miles north of Colombia.
The attack took place in a place where there were not many swimmers, the network wrote AFP, citing local sources.
Diving instructor Mirla Zambrano said the incident is the first unprovoked attack by a shark on a tourist in San Andres.
“We were all very surprised,” said Zambrano, 50, according to Daily Mirror.
A government spokesman also confirmed the incident, saying, “We have diving programs with professionals, near whom sharks pass, but something like this has never happened.”
Marine biologist Rodrigo Lopez said that after the incident people are very worried.
A witness said the attacked man was a good swimmer and had some time in the area. He had entered the water for the second time and had started calling for help, surrounded by a pool of blood, Lopez explained.
