Once a blessed land for great Italian directors and actors, from Federico Fellini to Sofia Loren, the film studios of Rome, Cinecitta are planning to make a total transformation to adapt to the new era.
Also known as “Hollywood on the Tiber”, Cinecitta was the center of the golden age of Italian cinema and now hopes to regain its former glory thanks to post-pandemic funding from the European Union.
Italy is the main beneficiary of the European bloc’s recovery fund and the outdated studios are in line to benefit 290 million euros, expanding and modernizing to take advantage of new ways of making and watching movies.
“We can return to this country the light that has always characterized it and that it deserves“, Says the director of Cinecitta Nicola Maccanico.
Cinecita has been the place where more than 3 thousand films have been produced, while 51 of them have won Oscars.
The studios were inaugurated on the southern outskirts of the Italian capital in 1937 to manifest the propaganda of Benito Mussolini’s fascist regime.
In the golden days of studios, Hollwood hits like Ben Hur in 1959 and some of the other masterpieces of cinema like Fellini’s La Dolce Vita were filmed in these studios.
But after 1960, it was impossible for studios to capture their prestige, due to competition from television and large production industries which offered better quality filmmaking.
