Italy seems to be getting closer and closer to a historic development: the election of a female president for the first time. After five days of stalemate and repeated voting, party leaders have been forced to seek a compromise solution.
There are two strong candidates in the race: Elisabetta Belloni, a career diplomat who heads the security services, and Justice Minister Marta Cartabia.
“I am working to elect a smart woman at the head of the state,” right-wing League leader Matteo Salvini told reporters after a meeting between the leaders of the two main center-left Democratic Party parties and The Five Stars Movement.
“I hope we have a result tomorrow,” he was quoted as saying by Reuters. Giuseppe Conte, the leader of the Five Stars, also said he wants the woman to replace the outgoing president, Sergio Mattarella, whose seven-year term expires next week.
The Italian president has considerable power in times of political crisis, which have already become commonplace for the eurozone’s third most important economy, where governments have found it difficult to survive for long periods of time.
In Italy, 1,009 members of parliament and regional representatives elect the president by secret ballot.
