The capital of Afghanistan was covered by a layer of snow this morning, as the cold weather adds to the problems of millions of people in need of food and shelter. “When it snows, it is a day of celebration and joy for the rich,” said Kabul resident Rahim.
“For the normal people of Afghanistan, who are 90-95% poor and without support, it is like poison,” he added. Flights from Kabul airport resumed today after several hours of snow delays. The streets of Kabul were mostly empty as shop owners and officials stood inside to protect themselves from the cold weather.
UN aid agencies and agencies warn that millions are needed to provide food and shelter to the impoverished country. Afghanistan’s economy has been devastated by decades of war, as well as the cessation of aid after the Taliban came to power on August 15.
Banks have imposed restrictions on the withdrawals of private individuals and many are selling their holdings to survive.
