Democratic Party Chairman Lulzim Basha and former Chairman Sali Berisha are expected to be questioned by the Prosecution, following the appearance of violent acts in the January 8 protest.
The news was confirmed for Top Channel journalist, Anila Hoxha by prosecutor Elio Mazreku, who is investigating the protest. It is learned that Basha and Berisha will be called as declarants.
Former Prime Minister Berisha called his supporters on January 8, in front of the courtyard of the PD headquarters, in a protest against the chairman of the Democratic Party, Lulzim Basha. The acts of violence started much earlier than the time of 12:00, announced as the moment of starting the protest.
The main door of the headquarters was forcibly opened, before the former prime minister arrived in the courtyard of the PD headquarters. The windows on the first floor of the building also opened forcibly, breaking the windows. The protesters stopped in the hallway, where they found themselves in front of other iron-reinforced doors.
The previously stated goal was to remove the chairman of the Democratic Party from office, following the decisions he had taken against former chairman Sali Berisha, declared non grata by the US for corruption and violation of democracy.
Protesters earlier raped presidency member Roland Bejko and barred him from entering the party headquarters as he left the square amidst beatings and insults.
They had also taken metal ladders with them to penetrate to the second floor from the main facade, where they fired stones and solid objects. Supporters of the former prime minister tried to enter from different directions, but everything seemed impossible.
An attempt by several people to climb the stairs to the second floor, on a balcony on the left wing, was repulsed by several people inside the building. One of the protesters was wounded in the head. Other attempts were also repulsed, as gas was used from inside the building to keep them away. An armored door on the right side of the building was managed to open.
Some organizers with megaphones urged the participants positioned further away, to approach around the headquarters of the DP to continue the protest.
Through a statement, the Democratic Party reacted by saying that “Sali Berisha is endangering the lives of dozens of Democrats with acts of violence today. “We call on the institutions to intervene to avoid the victims of Sali Berisha’s violence among the Democrats!”
Police forces intervened briefly using tear gas.
Berisha’s supporters dispersed quickly and police units took control of the DP building, lined up in large numbers at its entrance.
The capital’s prosecutor’s office cordoned off the area as a crime scene, and for several hours judicial police officers documented the acts of violence.
Meanwhile, several dozen people were escorted to police stations during the afternoon.
The organizers of this protest, which had mostly mobilized young people and teenagers in violent acts, did not express any distancing from the violence exercised against the PD headquarters, and even stated that they will protest again.
They left without leaving any door or window the headquarters of the Democratic Party, which they call the house of freedom and democracy, after hitting it with all the strong objects, iron-clad devices of various kinds.
US, European and OSCE diplomats condemned the violence and urged organizers to reduce protest tensions.
