The head of the Japanese Yakuza mafia, Takeshi Ebisawa, was photographed showing infiltrating agents how the rocket launcher was used, adding that it could supply up to 5,000 AK47 assault rifles and one million rounds of ammunition.
In exchange for his goods Takeshi Ebisawa demanded not money but heroin and methamphetamine.
Ebisawa, 57, is accused of plotting terror around the world as he exchanged the arsenal he provided for drugs that could secure quick money from his distribution organization.
Ebisawa’s distribution network operated primarily in New York and it should not be certain where it supplied goods such as surface-to-air missiles, said U.S. officials who trapped it.
Trial documents showed that the Japanese crime syndicate could supply Kalashnikovs, sniper rifles and heavy machine guns in addition to rocket launchers.
“We assume that Ebisawa and his associates attempted to sell heavy weapons to masked DEA agents in exchange for large quantities of illegal drugs,” the US Department of Justice said in a statement.
Prosecutors’ evidence included a photo of Ebisawa holding the rocket launcher on his shoulder.
The trafficker reportedly traveled to Copenhagen on February 3, where he met with infiltrating DEA agents and two masked Danish police officers, whom he believed were representatives of rebel groups in Burma.
Ebisawa and Thai Somphop Singhasiri planned to distribute 500kg of methamphetamine and 500kg of heroin, according to prosecutors.
“Drugs were destined for the streets of New York, while arms shipments went to armed factions of unstable countries,” said U.S. Attorney Damian Williams.
“The members of this international crime syndicate will no longer be able to endanger people’s lives and will face justice for their actions.”
Also involved in the plot “weapons instead of drugs” were also Thai Sompak Rukrasaranee, and 53-year-old Suksan “Bobby” Jullanan, who has dual American and Thai citizenship.
Arms trafficking can carry a life sentence in the US.
