Evidence suggests that Russia is planning “the biggest war in Europe since 1945,” said British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
“All indications are that the plan has already begun in some sense,” he told the BBC.
Intelligence suggests Russia intends to launch an invasion that will encircle the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, Johnson said.
“People need to understand the huge cost to human life it can bring,” he said.
The British Prime Minister was speaking from Munich, where world leaders are meeting for an annual security conference.
Recent estimates by the US government suggest that the number of Russian troops now stationed along the Ukrainian border, both in Russia and in neighboring Belarus, is between 169,000 and 190,000.
Western officials have warned in recent weeks that Russia could prepare to invade at any time, but Russia has denied the allegations, saying troops are conducting military exercises in the region.
Asked if a Russian invasion was still considered imminent, Johnson said: “I’m afraid that this is what the evidence shows.”
